If soil is the strategy, agronomy is the discipline that keeps it honest.
We work with Chris Taylor of Down To Earth Agronomy — recently named Agronomist of the Year and a Nuffield Scholar who has studied regenerative systems around the world.
But titles aside, what matters to us is simple:
He walks our fields.
He digs holes.
He challenges our thinking.
And he is completely independent.
What Is Agronomy?
Agronomy is the science and practice of growing crops well.
It covers:
-
Soil management
-
Crop nutrition
-
Weed control
-
Disease management
-
Input decisions
-
Yield and profitability
An agronomist helps farmers decide what to apply, when to apply it, and why.
Traditionally, much of UK agronomy has been closely tied to chemical and fertiliser supply. Many agronomists were linked to product companies. Advice often came with a sales structure attached.
That system grew high yields — but it also built dependency.
We’ve chosen a different route.
Why Independence Matters
Chris is fully independent.
He does not sell fertiliser.
He does not sell chemicals.
He does not earn commission on what we apply.
That changes the conversation completely.
Instead of “What should we put on?”
The question becomes: “Do we actually need to put anything on?”
That shift is significant.
Regenerative Agronomy Isn’t Easy
Reducing fertiliser and chemical use sounds straightforward.
It isn’t.
That’s agronomy done properly.
